The steam turbine bearing in a steam turbine refers to the bearing sleeve installed on the rotor shaft of the turbine, which is used to support and reduce friction, ensuring smooth operation of the rotor.

Steam turbine bearings are typically made of metal materials, with common materials including white cast iron, bronze, and sliding bearings. These materials have excellent anti-wear and heat resistance properties, enabling them to withstand high-speed rotation and high-temperature environments.

Steam turbine bearings are generally divided into two types: main bearings and thrust bearings. The main bearings are located at both ends of the rotor and are used to support the rotor shaft and bear greater loads. The thrust bearings are located in the middle of the rotor shaft and are used to support and stabilize the rotor.

To ensure the proper functioning of the bearings, regular lubrication and maintenance are required. Lubricating oil or grease is commonly used to reduce friction between the bearings and the rotor shaft, and severely worn bearings should be replaced promptly to maintain normal operation.

Turbine bearings are critical components that have a significant impact on the performance and lifespan of steam turbines. Therefore, strict control of material selection, manufacturing processes, and operating conditions is necessary during the design, manufacturing, and maintenance processes to ensure the quality and reliability of the bearings.

Types of  Steam turbine Bearings: Depending on the application and design requirements, different types of bearings can be used in steam turbines, including sliding bearings, rolling bearings, and gas bearings. Sliding bearings are the most common type, made of metal materials and offering low friction coefficient and good load-carrying capacity.

Material Selection: Bearings are typically made of materials with high hardness, wear resistance, and heat resistance. Common materials include white cast iron, bronze alloys, and bearing steels. White cast iron is often used for main bearings due to its high wear resistance and load-carrying capacity. Bronze alloys are commonly used for thrust bearings due to their good wear resistance and lubricating properties.

Lubrication System: Proper lubrication is necessary to reduce friction and wear of the bearings. The lubrication system typically includes components such as oil sumps, oil pumps, filters, and coolers. Lubricating oil is guided to the bearing surfaces through oil sumps and oil pumps, forming a lubricating film to reduce friction. Coolers are used to control the temperature of the lubricating oil, ensuring suitable viscosity and lubricating performance even in high-temperature environments.

Bearing Clearance: The clearance between the bearings and the rotor shaft is an important design parameter. Excessive clearance can lead to instability and vibration, while insufficient clearance can increase friction and wear. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the appropriate bearing clearance during the design process to balance the bearing's load-carrying capacity and friction losses.

Maintenance and Overhaul: Regular maintenance and overhaul are crucial for the long-term reliable operation of the bearings. This includes cleaning the bearing surfaces, replacing severely worn bearings, checking the working condition of the lubrication system, and adjusting the bearing clearance. Proper maintenance measures can extend the bearing's service life and ensure the reliability of the steam turbine.

It is important to note that specific design and maintenance requirements for turbine bearings may vary among different manufacturers and models. Choosing a reputable supplier is essential to ensure good product quality and service.
